Shillong, June 3 : In a significant stride towards enhancing urban tourism and development, the Government of Meghalaya today officially launched the Ward’s Lake Revitalization Program. A pivotal moment of the event was the formal transfer of the iconic Ward’s Lake from the Forest Department to the Tourism Department, a move that underscores the state’s renewed focus on promoting vibrant visitor experiences.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, in his address, announced that tenders for the ambitious revitalization project, estimated at approximately Rs 20 crores for the Ward’s Lake section, will be floated imminently. An additional sanction will be allocated for the accompanying promenade. The Chief Minister highlighted the project’s multifaceted potential, envisioning it as a dynamic platform for musicians to perform, a venue for showcasing local and other films, and a central point for calendar events. “All this is part of a larger proposal and mindset that we have,” he affirmed.
Ward’s Lake, affectionately known as Nan Polok, is a historical artificial lake dating back to 1894, nestled in the heart of Shillong. For generations, it has served as a cherished recreational spot for both locals and tourists. The Rs 18 crore rejuvenation initiative aims to transform the lake into a thriving cultural and recreational hub. Planned enhancements include captivating sound and light shows, enchanting musical fountains, new cafes, and dedicated entertainment zones for families and children. Crucially, the visiting hours will be extended until 10 PM, offering more opportunities for evening enjoyment.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh underscored the project’s goal to enrich Shillong’s tourism offerings. He proudly noted the lake’s historical significance, stating, “the lake is also iconic because it is the oldest artificial lake in North East India.” The Minister also suggested that the extended hours would allow office-goers to enjoy leisurely strolls around the lake after their working day concludes.
The revitalization plan also addresses infrastructure to accommodate anticipated increased footfall. This includes the widening of existing roads and the development of pedestrian-friendly walkways, ensuring safe and convenient access for all visitors. This program is part of a broader series of government initiatives aimed at enhancing Shillong’s urban landscape and tourist attractions. Previously, the government had announced the development of a 1.2 km promenade opposite Ward’s Lake, which will feature plazas, shops, vending zones, parking facilities, and restaurants. These interconnected developments are poised to provide a significant impetus to local businesses and offer expanded recreational avenues for both the local community and visitors.
The Ward’s Lake Revitalization Program is slated for completion in two phases. The initial phase will concentrate on introducing new entertainment features and crucial infrastructural developments. The government anticipates that these efforts will lead to a significant increase in tourism, fostering an overall uplift in the economic well-being of the region.
The launch event was attended by a distinguished gathering of dignitaries, including Conrad K. Sangma, Chief Minister; Paul Lyngdoh, Tourism Minister; Cyril V.D.
