Shillong, December 19 : Anticipating a sharp rise in vehicular movement and pedestrian footfall during the upcoming festive season, the Office of the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, has issued a traffic advisory urging commuters to follow traffic regulations for safety and smooth flow.
Police cautioned that heavy traffic congestion is likely near markets, shopping areas, places of worship and event venues, and advised the public to plan travel accordingly.
The advisory appealed to commuters to use public transport wherever possible to ease road congestion. Motorists have also been instructed to avoid roadside parking and to park only in designated parking areas.
Pedestrians were advised to avoid jaywalking and to use footpaths and designated crossings (zebra crossings) for safety.
Commuters have been asked to avoid peak hours when possible and to allow extra travel time. The advisory stressed that emergency vehicles must be given right of way at all times.
Emphasising road safety, police reminded motorists to not drink and drive and to avoid over-speeding. The public was also urged to wear helmets and seatbelts at all times and drive or ride cautiously.
The advisory stated that the Shillong Traffic Police (STP) will conduct vigorous checking for Motor Vehicles Act violations, and urged the public to adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations.
Police said that depending on the ground situation, the STP may divert vehicular movement around Police Bazar and Laitumkhrah “towards the best way possible” during the festive season.
