Shillong, July 9 : The year 2025 has witnessed a disturbing rise in femicide and gender-related violence across various districts of Meghalaya, prompting the Meghalaya State Commission for Women to issue a strong condemnation and call for immediate action. The concerning trend reflects a profound lack of respect for human life and a growing insecurity for women and children in both public and private spheres.
The State Commission for Women has taken serious note of the escalating pattern of aggression, anger, and threats evident in numerous cases reported to them. A press statement released by Iamon Syiem, Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women, highlighted the significant level of fear and insecurity stemming from domestic violence and sexual harassment in workplaces.
In response to this alarming situation, the Commission has issued a fervent appeal to every citizen and person in authority to remain vigilant and intervene promptly. They urge reporting any indication of threat or violence occurring in local communities or workplaces. The Commission’s stated mission is to actively work towards a zero-tolerance policy for all forms of gender-based violence, encompassing violence against women and children, including both boys and girls.
Furthermore, the Commission has specifically addressed the Press fraternity and all social influencers, urging them to exercise responsibility and gender sensitivity in their reporting of cases involving violence against women and children. Recognizing media as a powerful tool, the statement requests mindful content creation and explicitly asks for the refrain from uploading obscene videos or content. Instead, they encourage reporting such material to the Commission or local authorities.
The public has also been urged to refrain from making obscene comments and to instead report any concerning content or material to the appropriate authorities for necessary action. The Meghalaya State Commission for Women emphasizes the collective responsibility required to tackle this societal ill and create a safer environment for all.
