Shillong, August 21: The State Level Awareness Program on Sport Climbing and Adventure Activities 2025 was formally inaugurated today at the Eastern Command Sport Climbing Node, 58 Gorkha Training Centre (GTC), Happy Valley.
The opening ceremony was graced by D.D. Shira, MCS, Director, Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs (DSYA), as the Chief Guest. Also present were Brig. Joe Sabby, Commandant, 58 GTC, as Guest of Honour, and Finely Pariat, General Secretary, Meghalaya State Olympic Association, as Special Guest.
Organized by the Meghalaya Sport Climbing and Mountaineering Association in collaboration with the Eastern Command Sport Climbing Node, 58 GTC with support from the DSYA, Government of Meghalaya, the program marks a significant milestone in promoting sport climbing and adventure sports across the state.
A major highlight was the introduction of a newly constructed standard climbing wall at the Centre—designed for all three international disciplines: Bouldering, Lead, and Speed Climbing. This landmark facility is expected to foster awareness, inspire participation, and encourage youth to embrace sport climbing as both a competitive sport and an adventurous pursuit.
The program drew 96 participants from 10 districts of Meghalaya, including Garo Hills, Jaintia Hills, Ri-Bhoi, West Khasi Hills, and East Khasi Hills. School children from the Army Public School, Happy Valley also attended the event, witnessing an electrifying climbing demonstration by the Eastern Command team.
On this occasion, the Association conveyed heartfelt gratitude to the Commandant of 58 Gorkha Training Centre for his generous support and for providing access to the climbing wall facilities, which made this initiative possible.
