State Level Inter-School Athletic Meet 2025 kicks off in Meghalaya

Shillong, May 20 : The Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, in collaboration with the Meghalaya Athletics Association, proudly inaugurated the State Level Inter-School Athletic Meet 2025 today at SAI STC, NEHU Shillong Campus. The event, scheduled from May 20th to 22nd, marks a significant opportunity for Meghalaya’s young athletes to showcase their talent and determination.  

Dignitaries included Shri Richard Yanthan, IAS, Joint Secretary, Sports & Youth Affairs department, as chief guest, Shri John F Kharshiing, Working President, Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) as Guest of Honour, Shri D. D Shira, MCS, Director, Sports & Youth Affairs department, Government of Meghalaya, Shri Finely Pariat, General Secretary, MSOA and other senior officials of the Sports Department; Police; School Authorities; Representatives of the Meghalaya Athletics Association; and students.

The programme commenced with a ceremonial unfurling marking the official opening of the three day multi sporting event.

In his address, Shri Richard Yanthan, IAS, Joint Secretary stated that, “This event seeks to recognize the power of sports and athleticism in shaping lives, especially of the youth. The government is committed towards building Meghalaya as a centre for sports excellence in the years to come, for which the government is investing on infrastructure development, and athlete development which is evident from the various schemes and policies which are being implemented”.

He stated that this event is a commitment to the roadmap, indicating the efforts of the government in addressing the importance of promoting sports for the overall development and well being of the youth of the state.

Shri John F Kharshiing, Working President, MSOA, stated that the event is significant as Meghalaya prepares to host the 39th National Games in 2027. He termed the athletic meet as a stepping stone to building a sporting culture.

In his keynote address, Shri DD Shira announced that the state athletic meet represents the culmination of district competitions, featuring 780 athletes competing across 48 disciplines in various age categories, alongside 36 officials. Additionally, 200 volunteers shall be assisting with the different disciplines.
