SUMO DRIVER ASSAULTED, THREATENED WITH GUN; POLICE LAUNCH PROBE

Shillong, March 28: Police at Jhalupara Out Post on Saturday questioned a Sumo driver who was allegedly assaulted and threatened with a firearm by an unidentified individual during a traffic congestion incident at Rilbong on Friday evening.

The victim, identified as Shanskhemborlang Laitmiet, appeared before the police accompanied by family members, fellow drivers from the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA), and members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC).

Speaking to reporters after his visit to the police station, Laitmiet said the incident occurred around 6:10 PM due to heavy traffic congestion, with vehicles moving in multiple lanes at Rilbong. He alleged that during the confusion, a man became aggressive, physically assaulted him, and later threatened him.

According to Laitmiet, two individuals came out of a Thar vehicle, and one of them damaged his car window. “I was trying to move toward my side as I intended to go to Anjalee, but due to the slow-moving traffic, I attempted to adjust. At that moment, the man hit my vehicle, and I got down. Two people approached me and began pushing and assaulting me,” he said.

Laitmiet further alleged that the accused threatened him by showing what appeared to be a firearm tucked in his waistband. “When I saw that they had a weapon, I restrained myself out of fear. He continued to hit and threaten me with abusive language and even threatened to shoot,” he added.

He later approached the Cantonment Beat House near the parking lot to report the incident, stating that he feared for his safety. Police then referred him to Jhalupara Out Post for further procedures, including a medical examination and filing of an FIR if desired. He also reported sustaining injuries, including internal damage due to the assault.

Amid speculation on social media claiming the accused was a police personnel, the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Vivek Syiem, clarified that the accused is not a policeman but a civilian. “A suo moto case has been registered, and the law will take its course,” the SP stated. He further emphasized that the police remain committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety

The FKJGP (Central Body) strongly condemned the incident, calling the act of assault and intimidation unacceptable. Chief Organising Secretary Khrawkupar Nongsiej stated that threatening the public with violence or misuse of authority is a serious offense, regardless of the individual’s identity.

The organisation also warned against misuse of influence or political connections, urging authorities to take strict legal action. “No one should misuse power to intimidate the public. The law must act impartially, and strict punishment must be ensured,” he said.

The FKJGP further cautioned that if strict action is not taken, the organisation may take its own course of action. The case has sparked public concern over road rage incidents and the misuse of intimidation tactics, with calls for swift justice and stronger enforcement of the law.
