Shillong, March 31: The Synjuk Ki Trai Bad Nongniah Kali Kamai Bri Hynniewtrep has strongly condemned the recent assault on a taxi driver in Shillong and has demanded immediate and strict action against the accused.
In a formal complaint submitted to the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, the union expressed deep concern over the violent incident that occurred on March 27, 2026. The organisation stated that such acts of violence not only harm the victim physically and mentally but also create fear and insecurity among the entire driving community.
The union has placed several key demands before the police, including Immediate identification and arrest of the perpetrator, Strong legal action under relevant laws and Revocation of the accused’s arms licence, citing misuse of a weapon to threaten the driver. The union alleged that the assailant had brandished a weapon during the incident, posing a serious threat to public safety.
Highlighting the challenges faced by commercial drivers, the union stated that taxi drivers provide essential services, often working late hours under difficult conditions. It stressed that any form of violence against drivers while on duty is unacceptable.
The union also warned that failure to take prompt and visible action may compel them to take further steps to safeguard the welfare and dignity of their members. Reaffirming solidarity with the victim, the union urged authorities to ensure swift justice and restore confidence among drivers in the state.
