Shillong, August 28: East Khasi Hills Police have apprehended three persons from Assam and recovered three motorcycles suspected to have been stolen during an operation in the Weiloi area under Mawsynram Police Station.
According to a police press release, reliable information was received at around 2:10 pm on August 27 that four persons from Assam were allegedly attempting to sell three suspected stolen motorcycles in Weiloi. Acting on the information, a team from Mawsynram Police Station proceeded to the area and laid an ambush.
Police said four persons were spotted with three motorcycles. On noticing the police team, all four attempted to flee towards the jungle. With assistance from local villagers, police managed to apprehend three of them, while the fourth person escaped and could not be traced despite efforts.
The arrested persons have been identified as Nipu Das (25), Karan Sundi (22) and Babu Basumatary (26), all residents of Tamulpur, Assam. Police recovered a Yamaha R15 bearing registration number AS-01-FV-4193, a Royal Enfield Hunter 350 bearing AS-25-Z-1346, and another Yamaha R15 bearing AS-27-F-1263.
According to police, the motorcycles were found without ignition keys and had direct wiring or connection systems in place, raising suspicion that they were stolen vehicles. The three accused and the recovered motorcycles were taken to Mawsynram Police Station for verification and necessary legal action.
Further investigation is underway to establish the ownership and origin of the motorcycles and to identify other persons who may be involved in the suspected vehicle theft network.
