Three Earthquakes Recorded Across Northeast Within 24 Hours; Strongest 5.1 Hits Assam’s Morigaon

Shillong, January 5 : The Northeast witnessed a series of earthquakes within a 24-hour window, with the strongest tremor of magnitude 5.1 striking Morigaon, Assam in the early hours of Monday, followed by a 3.9-magnitude quake in Gomati, Tripura, and a mild 2.7-magnitude tremor in West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, officials said.

5.1 Quake in Assam at 4:17 AM; Epicentre Morigaon : The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) recorded the Assam quake at 04:17:40 IST with the epicentre in Morigaon and a depth of 50 km.

3.9 Tremor in Tripura at 3:33 AM; Depth 54 Km : Earlier, a tremor of magnitude 3.9 was recorded in Gomati district, Tripura, at 03:33:32 IST, at a depth of 54 km, according to the NCS bulletin.

Mild 2.7 Earthquake in West Khasi Hills on Jan 4 Morning : Meanwhile, NCS recorded a 2.7-magnitude earthquake in West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, at 08:21:22 IST on January 4, with coordinates around 25.53°N, 91.20°E.
