Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain Likely in East Khasi Hills from March 15–19

Shillong, March 15: The Office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, has issued a weather advisory warning of thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rainfall and gusty winds in the district between March 15 and March 19, 2026, based on forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). 

According to the advisory, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds of 40–50 kmph, heavy rainfall and possible hail are likely at isolated places on March 15. On March 16, thunderstorms and lightning with gusty winds of 30–40 kmph along with heavy rainfall are expected in some areas. 

The forecast further indicates that thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rainfall may continue at isolated locations on March 17, while thunderstorms and lightning are also likely on March 18 and 19. 

The district administration has urged residents to take precautionary measures during the period. Citizens have been advised to secure loose objects such as tin sheets, bricks, signboards and other materials that could be blown away by strong winds. People are also advised to switch off electrical appliances during lightning to prevent damage. 

Authorities warned that heavy rainfall could lead to flash floods, particularly in areas near rivers and streams. Residents have been asked to avoid walking or driving through moving water and to stay away from streams, drains, culverts, rivers and waterfalls during heavy rain. 

The advisory also cautions against driving through flooded areas and urges people to stay away from electric poles and power lines to avoid electrocution. Citizens have further been advised not to venture into streams or rivers and to remain indoors during hailstorms. 

In case of emergencies, the public has been asked to dial 112 for assistance.

The district administration has urged residents to remain alert and follow safety precautions to ensure public safety during the forecasted weather conditions.
