TRADITIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN MEGHALAYA PLAY VITAL ROLE IN ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION

Shillong, August 11 : The Government of Meghalaya has notified several sacred forests as Community Reserves under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. This is in recognition of the important role that these forests play in environmental conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources.

Traditional institutions in Meghalaya, such as Village Dorbars, have also played a vital role in environmental conservation. These institutions have a long history of managing sacred forests and other natural resources in a sustainable way. They have also been instrumental in raising awareness about the importance of environmental conservation among the local communities.

Local communities and traditional institutions in Meghalaya are already involved in developmental planning, providing support to Village Employment Councils, identification of beneficiaries of various government programmes, making available community land for construction projects, Management of Community Reserves, etc. for development of tribal regions in the State.

This is a positive step towards the conservation of the environment and the sustainable development of Meghalaya. It is important to continue to support these traditional institutions and to involve the local communities in the conservation efforts.
