Jowai, July 7: The West Jaintia Hills Police have issued a comprehensive traffic advisory for the annual Behdeinkhlam Festival, which is being held from July 6 to 9 at Aitnar, Jowai, to ensure smooth vehicular movement and the successful conduct of the festival.
According to a press release issued by the Office of the Superintendent of Police, the closing day of the festival on July 9 is expected to witness the presence of the Chief Minister of Assam as the Chief Guest, along with several VVIPs and other dignitaries.
On July 8, police have imposed no-entry restrictions on several key roads during specified hours. From 9:00 am to 11:30 am, vehicles will not be allowed on the route from Loomsoojung (New Hill) through Iawmusiang, H.K. Singh, Chutwakhu and Khliehchnong to Chilliangraij. Additional restrictions from 12 noon to 4:30 pm will apply on routes passing through Iawmusiang, Stand War, MynThong Road and Mission Compound–Longpiah Road. No-parking zones have also been declared in the Iawmusiang area, Stand War, Mission Compound Road and Longpiah Road.
For July 9, several roads will operate as one-way routes, while no-entry restrictions will be enforced on multiple roads leading to Aitnar, Chutwakhu, Chilliang Raij, Longpiah and Dulong. Police have also designated one-side parking areas for vehicles with passes, separate VIP parking zones, a no-vehicle zone around Aitnar, and dedicated parking lots for heavy and light vehicles. Additional no-parking stretches have been identified across major roads in Jowai town.
The police further informed that vehicle staggering will continue on July 6 and 7 along NH-44, from the Riatmuriam area to New Hill Police Point, during the movement of the traditional Symbood Khnong, Deinkhlam and Khnong Blaiprocessions.
The West Jaintia Hills Police have appealed to the public to cooperate with the traffic regulations and follow the directions of traffic personnel to ensure the smooth and safe conduct of one of Meghalaya’s most significant traditional festivals.
