Shillong, September 18: Two persons accused of allegedly ramming their two-wheeler into Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Lovish Garg during a midnight naka at Urkaliar have been arrested and remanded to 14 days in judicial custody. Police have also stated that material evidence gathered during the investigation indicates that the two accused are members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU).
East Khasi Hills SP in-charge Traffic, Hari Prasath M.R., said the special naka was jointly conducted by local police, traffic personnel and Special Operations Teams between 11 pm and 2 am.
According to him, at around 1.30 am, a two-wheeler carrying a rider and a pillion allegedly attempted to evade the checking point. “When the Additional SP (Traffic) tried to stop them, they ran over him and he sustained injuries. Both were arrested and the vehicle was seized,” Prasath said.
The two accused have been booked under several provisions, including attempt to murder, disobedience of an order issued by a public servant and causing grievous injury to a public servant. Garg sustained injuries to his legs and head and was shifted to hospital for treatment. Police said stitches were administered and that his condition is stable.
Prasath further said that medical examination conducted after the arrest found both accused to be under the influence of alcohol. “During medical examination they were found drunk, so that may be one of the reasons. Further interrogation and examination are on,” he said.
Responding to questions over the alleged KSU link, the SP said the police statement was not based on assumption. Asked whether the two were suspected to be members of the KSU, he said, “Yes. Interrogation is on and whatever has been found has been said in the press release.”
He also rejected claims denying their association with the organisation, saying police have material evidence to support their statement. “We have material evidence. Our statement is based on material evidence. Based on those we have framed the sections,” Prasath said.
However, he said certain evidence could not be disclosed at this stage as the investigation and interrogation are still underway. “There are a few evidences which can’t be revealed to the general public,” he added.
Following the incident, police have also reviewed safety protocols for personnel deployed at nakas. Prasath said officers have been briefed on how to respond when motorists turn violent or attempt to escape. Information regarding fleeing vehicles will also be relayed immediately to the next junction to enable interception.
