Shillong, May 14: Police in East Jaintia Hills district seized 30,000 explosive detonators from a vehicle at Umkiang village during the early hours of May 13 and arrested two persons in connection with the illegal transportation of explosives.
According to Superintendent of Police Pankaj Kumar Rasgania, the naka party of Umkiang Police Patrol Post intercepted a suspicious white Hyundai Eon bearing registration number AS-10-A-5916 at around 2:30 am at 2 Kilo, Umkiang, while the vehicle was proceeding towards Silchar.
During a thorough search of the vehicle, police recovered 30,000 explosive detonators concealed inside two carton boxes and one gunny bag. The explosives were allegedly being transported illegally.
The two occupants of the vehicle were identified as Kamrul Ali Laskar and Ibrahim Uddin Laskar. Both have been arrested.
Police have registered a criminal case at Lumshnong Police Station vide Lumshnong PS Case No. 25(05)2026 under Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita read with Section 5 of the Explosive Substances Act.
Investigation has been initiated to trace both the forward and backward linkages related to the explosives, police said.
