TWO MEGHALAYAN FILMMAKERS SELECTED FOR INTERNATIONAL EVENT

Shillong, October 3 : Fraternity Art Cine Entertainment Shillong has expressed sincere gratitude to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, for enabling filmmakers from North- Eastern states to participate in the prestigious Busan International Film Festival, 2024.

As part of this initiative, two filmmakers from each North-Eastern state will be attending the festival, scheduled to take place from October 2nd to October 11th, 2024, in Busan, South Korea. The Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Government of Meghalaya, has recommended two talented filmmakers from the state: Simi Khongtiang from Jaintia Hills and Elvachisa Sangma from Tura. Simi Khongtiang is an emerging filmmaker recognized for her contributions to regional cinema, while Elvachisa Sangma is an award- winning filmmaker who has gained recognition on prominent platforms such as the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF).

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting tasked each North-Eastern state with nominating two representatives—one young filmmaker and one awardee from esteemed film festivals like the National Film Awards (NFA), International Film Festival of India (IFFI), or Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF). The final selections were submitted by September 25th, 2024, ensuring a broad representation of North-East filmmakers at the festival.

In support of this delegation, the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) will cover all expenses, including airfare and accommodation for five days during the festival, excluding travel days.

Fraternity Art Cine Entertainment praised the Ministry’s effort, calling it a vital initiative to uplift filmmakers from the North-East and help them gain international exposure. Participation in the Busan International Film Festival will provide a unique platform for these filmmakers to showcase their talents on a global stage, fostering creative exchanges and collaborations.

This support from the Ministry reflects the government’s commitment to promoting and nurturing the North-East’s rich cinematic heritage, offering regional filmmakers opportunities to achieve global recognition.

The Busan International Film Festival, one of Asia’s foremost film events, will provide filmmakers like Simi Khongtiang and Elvachisa Sangma, along with others from the region, a chance to highlight the diversity and creative excellence of North-Eastern cinema to a worldwide audience.
