UDP to decide on GHADC, Shillong bye-election post Assembly session

Shillong , February 26: The United Democratic Party (UDP) will hold a meeting after the Assembly’s budget session to decide on its participation in two key elections – the April 10 Garo Hills Autonomous District Council polls and the Shillong parliamentary constituency bye-election, triggered by the passing of VPP leader Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, UDP chief Metbah Lyngdoh said, “As of now, we have not discussed in the party, so the party has to first sit. After the session, we will definitely discuss the way forward as a party about this MP bye-election.”

On the GHADC polls, Lyngdoh added, “For that also, we are too busy with the Assembly session. So post-session, maybe sometime next week before the 10th, we will try (to take a call). We will meet first and we will take a decision.”

The UDP leader explained that party leaders from Garo Hills would meet to assess the best approach for the 2026 GHADC polls.

“We have entrusted our party leaders who are looking after the entire Garo Hills area to sit and discuss it, and once the Assembly session is over, we will meet with them and seek their views on whether to contest the elections,” he said.
