Nongpoh, June 8: Ri-Bhoi Police have appealed to the public for assistance in identifying an unknown man who succumbed to injuries after being involved in a suspected hit-and-run accident near Byrnihat.
According to a press release issued by the Superintendent of Police, Ri-Bhoi District, information was received through the 112 emergency helpline on April 18, 2026, at around 7:18 PM regarding a road traffic accident at 13th Mile along NH-6 in Byrnihat.
Upon enquiry, it was learnt from the informant, Mirajul Rehman, that an unidentified injured man was found lying beside the road and was suspected to have been the victim of a hit-and-run incident involving an unknown vehicle.
The injured person was initially taken to Byrnihat PHC by a 108 ambulance for treatment before being referred to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Shillong, for further medical care.
Police stated that the man had reportedly been loitering around the Byrnihat area for a considerable period and had no known relatives. Despite undergoing treatment at NEIGRIHMS, he passed away on June 5, 2026, at around 12:05 AM. Information regarding his death was received by police from the NEIGRIHMS Police Assistance Booth later that morning.
The body has been preserved at the NEIGRIHMS mortuary. However, despite sincere efforts by the police to ascertain his identity and trace his relatives or legal heirs, the deceased remains unidentified and the body remains unclaimed.
The deceased has been described as a male aged between 40 and 50 years, approximately 5.2 feet tall, of medium build, with a swarthy complexion, moustache, and short black hair. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a blue T-shirt and dark blue track pants.
