Unidentified Body from East Jaintia Hills Mine Blast Remains Unclaimed

Khliehriat, February 16 : One of the victims of the illegal coal mine explosion at Mynsyngat–Thangsko area in East Jaintia Hills district remains unidentified and unclaimed, authorities informed on Monday.

According to the Office of the District Public Relations Officer, the incident occurred on February 5, 2026 at a coal mine located under Umpleng Police Outpost, following which rescue and disaster response operations were launched immediately.

After inquest and post-mortem examination, the deceased has been described as a non-tribal male, approximately 40 years old and about 5 feet in height. The body is currently kept at the morgue of Khliehriat Civil Hospital awaiting identification.

The information was provided by the Investigating Officer of Khliehriat Police Station case No. 14(02)2026 registered under relevant provisions of the BNS, MMDR Act and Explosive Substances Act.

Authorities have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward to help identify the deceased.
