Shillong, April 01 : The SSLC results announced on 5th April 2025 brought encouraging news for the state, with 55,473 students passing and an overall pass percentage of 87.10%—a significant improvement from the previous average of approximately 55%. This commendable performance, however, has led to an acute shortage of intake capacity for Class XI across many districts, particularly in rural areas.
Currently, the total intake capacity for Class XI in the state stands at 51,067. However, this capacity is disproportionately concentrated in urban areas and in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region. A district-wise assessment indicates a shortfall of approximately 12,000 seats.
To address this gap, there is an urgent need to expand the Higher Secondary education infrastructure. The Education Department has encouraged private secondary schools to upgrade and introduce new streams. Encouragingly, 96 private schools have expressed willingness to transition to Higher Secondary level, potentially adding around 9,000 new seats.
The remaining shortfall must be addressed by enhancing capacity in Government schools.
