WARMER CONDITIONS, BELOW-NORMAL RAINFALL LIKELY IN MEGHALAYA DURING APRIL–JUNE 2026: IMD

No Heatwave Expected, But Higher Temperatures May Cause Discomfort

Shillong, April 2: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences has indicated that Meghalaya is likely to experience above-normal temperatures and below-normal rainfall during the hot weather season from April to June 2026. According to the IMD, heatwave conditions are not expected in the State. However, both maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to remain above normal across most parts of Meghalaya during this period.

The forecast states that Maximum temperatures are expected to be normal to above normal in most areas and Minimum temperatures are likely to stay above normal across the State.

For April 2026, temperatures are expected to be higher than usual in many parts of Meghalaya, both during the day and night. Despite the rise in temperatures, IMD has clarified that no heatwave days are likely during April–June 2026.

The outlook also indicates that rainfall across Northeast India, including Meghalaya, is likely to be below normal during the season. This could have implications for Water availability and Agricultural activities, especially in rain-dependent regions. The combination of warmer days and nights, along with reduced rainfall, may lead to increased thermal discomfort, particularly during dry spells.

The IMD stated that the forecast is based on Neutral El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions and Neutral Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). These neutral conditions suggest no strong large-scale climatic drivers to significantly enhance rainfall activity over the region.

While extreme heat conditions are unlikely, Meghalaya is expected to face a warmer and drier-than-usual season, requiring preparedness in sectors such as water management and agriculture.
