WATER HERITAGE FORTNIGHT CELEBRATED IN EAST KHASI HILLS DISTRICT

Shillong, December 01 : The observance of Water Heritage Fortnight as part of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the rain Campaign 2023 was held at Wards Lake Shillong today. The initiative brought together Village Executive Councils (VECs) from various villages across East Khasi Hills District to emphasize the crucial importance of water preservation and conservation.

In her address, Deputy Commissioner R.M Kurbah expressed concern over the alarming decline of streams and rivers due to human impact. She urged the adoption of proactive measures to protect these vital water sources for future generations. Emphasizing the significance of responsible water usage, she called upon the community to implement practices that ensure the preservation of water for upcoming needs.

Eleven VECs representing the different C&RD Blocks of East Khasi Hills District were felicitated by Deputy Commissioner R.M. Kurbah for their contributions to water conservation efforts within their respective areas.

The event also saw participation from various villages across the District, with VECs commending Meghalaya’s unwavering commitment to water conservation. They highlighted the existence of two significant water conservation points in Meghalaya that have persisted for nearly a century – Wards Lake and Thadlaskeiñ in Jowai, which serve as exemplary models for water conservation initiatives.

The observance of Water Heritage Fortnight serves as a reminder of the critical role water plays in our lives and the urgent need to take collective action to conserve and protect this precious resource.
