Watershed Yatra Under PMKSY-WDC 2.0 Successfully Held in East Khasi Hills

Shillong, March 29 : The Watershed Yatra, organised under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) Watershed Development Component (WDC) 2.0, was successfully conducted today at Mawan Village, Mylliem C&RD Block, East Khasi Hills. The event aimed to promote sustainable water management and soil conservation practices while fostering community participation in watershed development initiatives.  

Dignitaries present were Hamletson Dohling, Adviser to the Chief Minister, Government of Meghalaya, TosanbhaMarwein, MCS, Block Development Officer, Mylliem, W. K. Kharkongor, Divisional Soil & Water Conservation Officer, Shillong Territorial Division, N. Khongwir Senior AS&WC Officer, Shillong Territorial Division, K. Synrem Sr. AS& WCO, P.khongsit  AS&WCO, and officials from other allied departments. Representatives for educational institutions and students were also present.

Hamletson Dohling at the Bhoomi Poojan ceremony, inaugurated the Springtap Chamber, a significant step toward enhancing water conservation efforts in the region. Hamletson spoke about the Watershed Programme and its benefits, stating that the Government is working hard for its efficient implementation.  

He mentioned that the government has a vision for the PMKSY initiatives and their implementation. He expressed his belief that through this programme, an awareness message about protecting nature could be spread. Additionally, he urged that, in this venture, the Government should work hand in hand with all stakeholders to protect the environment and its natural resources.  

Later, attendees actively participated in the Shramdan (Plantation Drive), demonstrating their commitment to environmental sustainability. Certificates were presented to recognise the efforts and contributions of water warriors and organisations toward watershed development. The event also featured cultural programmes of Shad Suk Mynsiem (Dance of Joyful Heart) and Shad Mastieh (Warrior Dance in Khasi Community), showcasing the rich cultural vibrancy of the region.  

At the state level, the yatra has successfully covered North Garo Hills, East Garo Hills, West Garo Hills, South West Garo Hills, South Garo Hills, West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, and East Khasi Hills. Furthermore, the yatra will proceed to West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills, and Ri Bhoi district.  

The PMKSY-WDC 2.0 scheme focuses on sustainable water resource management, land conservation, and improved irrigation efficiency to enhance agricultural productivity. By integrating agriculture, afforestation, and water management, the program aims to create climate-resilient ecosystems while supporting rural livelihoods.
