Jowai, June 3 : In a significant relief for the tourism sector and visitors, the West Jaintia Hills District administration has announced the reopening of all tourist spots in the district, effective from June 3, 2025. This decision comes as a direct result of improved weather conditions in the region.
The order, issued by Abhinav Kumar Singh, IAS, Deputy Commissioner & Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority, rescinds a previous directive from May 31, 2025, which had mandated the closure of all tourist destinations due to incessant rainfall and the need for precautionary measures.
The earlier closure was implemented after a period of relentless downpour that raised concerns about visitor safety. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall across various districts of Meghalaya, including West Jaintia Hills, for the end of May and beginning of June. These warnings highlighted potential impacts such as major disruption of traffic flow and damages to vulnerable structures and roads due to heavy rainfall and landslides.
While the immediate threat has subsided, the IMD’s forecast for June 3, 2025, still indicates the likelihood of heavy rainfall over East Garo Hills, South Garo Hills, and West Garo Hills Districts, with thunderstorms and lightning expected at many places over Meghalaya. Therefore, visitors are still advised to stay updated with the latest weather reports and exercise caution.
The reopening is expected to provide a boost to local tourism and related businesses that had been affected by the temporary closure.
