Williamnagar Police Arrest Man for Allegedly Uploading Obscene Content on Facebook

Shillong, May 20: Williamnagar Police have arrested a man for allegedly operating a Facebook account and YouTube channel through which sexually explicit and vulgar content targeting women was uploaded on social media platforms.

According to East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police S.A. Rynjah, the accused has been identified as Newhard M. Sangma alias Bethuel, a resident of A’chak Jangkigre in Williamnagar. He was arrested on May 20, 2026.

Police informed that a case has been registered at Williamnagar Police Station vide Case No. 21/2026 under Sections 75(IV)(3) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read with Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

The investigation was initiated after authorities received information that the accused had allegedly been habitually uploading vulgar and obscene content through publicly accessible social media accounts.

Police stated that recent uploads on Facebook were found to be obscene in nature and prima facie attracted provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act.

The East Garo Hills District Police also cautioned the public that uploading, transmitting or publishing sexually explicit content on social media platforms constitutes a cognizable cyber offence under the Information Technology Act.

Police further urged citizens to report incidents related to online obscenity, cyber-blackmail and child sexual abuse material (CSAM) through proper legal channels, including the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP), the official platform for reporting cyber-related offences.
