Shillong, October 6: A woman was allegedly stabbed in the neck with a sharp weapon and robbed of her mobile phone at Nongmensong in Shillong on Monday night, with the suspected attacker later apprehended and handed over to police.
The victim, identified as Selbina T. Sangma, a tenant at Nongmensong Umkdait Lane-7, was reportedly returning from her workplace at Reliance Trends, Nongmensong, when the incident took place at around 9.15 pm.
According to reports, the assailant allegedly attacked her with a sharp weapon before snatching her mobile phone and fleeing from the spot. A local resident, Daphilin Wahlang, reportedly found Selbina bleeding heavily on the road shortly after the attack. On being asked what had happened, Selbina allegedly told her that a man had stabbed her and taken her mobile phone.
Considering the seriousness of the injury, particularly the heavy bleeding from her neck, Wahlang arranged for her to be rushed to NEIGRIHMS instead of waiting for an ambulance. Medical examination at the hospital reportedly revealed that Selbina had sustained a deep stab wound to the neck, with the injury extending up to the neck bone.
Her elder brother, Vincent T. Sangma, subsequently lodged an FIR at Nongmensong Police Station on Tuesday in connection with the incident. According to Wahlang, members of the public managed to apprehend the alleged attacker on the same night and handed him over to the police. Police have taken up the case and further investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the attack and robbery.
