Woman Stabbed to Death in South West Khasi Hills; Elder Brother Accused, Hunt Underway

Mawkyrwat, July 14: A 56-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her elder brother at Pyndenumsaw village in South West Khasi Hills district on Monday morning. Police have registered a murder case and launched a search to apprehend the accused, who remains absconding.

According to police, information was received at around 7:30 am from the Civil Hospital, Mawkyrwat, regarding a brought-dead case involving Snity Wahlang (56), wife of Drap Wanniang and a resident of Pyndenumsaw village.

A team from the Mawkyrwat Women Police Station immediately rushed to the hospital, where it was ascertained that the woman had sustained fatal stab injuries allegedly inflicted with a sharp weapon by her elder brother, Bailing Wahlang (62).

Police said local villagers found the injured woman and rushed her to Civil Hospital, Mawkyrwat, but the attending doctor declared her brought dead.

Following the incident, police conducted an inquest over the body as per legal procedure before sending it for post-mortem examination. A police team also secured and cordoned off the crime scene to preserve evidence.

Investigators, accompanied by the Crime Scene Unit (CSU), later visited the place of occurrence at Pyndenumsaw village. Guided by the village secretary and eyewitnesses, the team carried out a detailed examination of the scene and completed all necessary forensic formalities.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused fled the village immediately after the alleged attack and has since been evading arrest.

Based on a written complaint lodged by Hehlungstar Marwein (36), Secretary of Pyndenumsaw village, police registered Mawkyrwat Women Police Station Case No. 12/2026 under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

After the completion of the post-mortem examination, the body was handed over to the victim’s family for the last rites.

Police said efforts are continuing to trace and arrest the accused while further investigation into the case is underway.
