Shillong, March 7 : Synod College, Shillong, marked International Women’s Day with a special event that included a thought-provoking talk and the release of a book celebrating the achievements of women in Meghalaya.
The event, organized by the Women’s Cell and the Centre for Historical Research Synod College (CHRSC), featured a special talk titled “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment” by Dr. Jenita Mary Nongkynrih, Head of the Urban and Regional Planning Division (URD), North Eastern Space Applications Centre, Government of India, Department of Space, Umiam, Meghalaya emphasizing the importance of gender equality and empowerment.
The highlight of the event was the release of the book “Women Pathfinders of Meghalaya,” edited by Dr. David Arnold Kharchandy, Assistant Professor in the Department of History and Secretary of the Centre for Historical Research at Synod College, Shillong. The book documents the contributions of pioneering women who have shaped the state’s cultural, social, and political landscape. It features 27 chapters dedicated to women leaders in various fields, including governance, education, social activism, and entrepreneurship.
Dr. Kharchandy highlighted the book’s significance, mentioning notable figures like Rose Milan Bathew Kharbuli, Silbi Passah, Reebecca Suchiang, Holibon Marbaniang, Sweetymon Rynjah, Trinity Saioo, Prof. Tiplut Nongbri, Silverine Swer, Uma Purkayastha and many others whose stories are featured in the book.
The book was formally released by the Chief Guest, Dr. Ricky A. J. Syngkon, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha. In his address, Dr. Syngkon acknowledged the invaluable role of women in Meghalaya’s development and stressed the need for continued support for women’s empowerment.
The event served as a tribute to the strength, resilience, and achievements of women in Meghalaya, inspiring future generations to strive for equality and leadership.
