Shillong, April 11 : The world is currently observing World Oral Health Month, a global initiative that commenced on March 20th, World Oral Health Day (WOHD), and will continue until April 20th. This extended period aims to amplify awareness about the crucial role oral health plays in overall well-being.
This year’s theme, “A Healthy Mouth is a Happy Mind,” underscores the fundamental connection between oral health and mental and physical wellness. The campaign emphasizes the need for accessible oral healthcare for everyone, irrespective of their background.
Despite advancements in dental care, millions worldwide continue to suffer from preventable oral diseases like tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer. These conditions can lead to pain, tooth loss, and decreased self-esteem. Alarmingly, research increasingly highlights the link between poor oral health and serious systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections. This underscores the critical importance of adopting and maintaining healthy oral hygiene practices to prevent long-term health complications.
The message remains consistent across all age groups: prioritize prevention, education, and timely treatment for optimal oral health.
Simple Steps for a Lifetime of Healthy Teeth and Gums:
The campaign advocates for the adoption of simple yet effective daily habits:
- Brush Twice a Day: Use fluoride toothpaste and brush for at least two minutes in the morning and before bed.
- Floss Daily: Clean between teeth daily to remove plaque and food particles.
- Eat a Balanced Diet: Focus on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to support strong teeth and gums.
- Limit Sugary Snacks: Reduce the intake of sugary foods and drinks that contribute to cavities.
- Schedule Regular Dental Check-ups: Visit your dentist for routine check-ups and professional cleanings.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help cleanse the mouth.
- Avoid Tobacco: Refrain from smoking and using chewing tobacco to significantly reduce the risk of gum disease and oral cancer.
Meghalaya Prioritizes Oral Healthcare at the Grassroots Level:
In Meghalaya, oral healthcare initiatives are being actively implemented under the National Oral Health Programme (NOHP), a part of the National Health Mission by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
Dr. Nabaneeta D. Mawrie, the State Nodal Officer for NOHP, highlighted the extensive outreach programs conducted by dental surgeons across the state, targeting both schools and communities.
Key initiatives in Meghalaya include:
- School-Based Initiatives: Regular dental check-ups and awareness talks on good oral hygiene, balanced diets, and proper brushing techniques (emphasizing brushing twice daily) are conducted in schools. Children requiring treatment are referred to nearby dental facilities.
- Community Outreach: Awareness programs on oral diseases and the dangers of tobacco use are organized at the community level. Regular oral cancer screenings are also being conducted to promote early detection and prevention.
