Shillong, July 16: A young man drowned while swimming in Umiam Lake near Jingkieng Kalong on Wednesday, police said.
According to police, Mawlai Police Station received information at around 12:30 pm that a person had drowned in the lake. A police team immediately rushed to the spot, while the Search and Rescue Team (SRT) of the Fire and Emergency Services, Shillong, was also alerted and promptly launched a search operation.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that the deceased, identified as Winifred Majaw, a resident of Lawsohtun, Shillong, had gone to the area with a group of friends from the same locality for an outing. Police said Majaw reportedly got into difficulty and drowned while swimming at around 10:20 am.
Following a search operation, the SRT recovered the body from the lake. Police said preliminary investigation found no evidence of foul play, and further necessary legal formalities are being carried out.
