Shillong, February 8 : Meghalaya Police are investigating a series of crimes reported across the state, including theft, burglary, and illegal border crossings.
West Garo Hills:
- Apprehension of Bangladeshi Nationals: On February 5th, police in Dalamgre (West Garo Hills) intercepted two vehicles (ML-14A-0593, ML-09A-3830) and apprehended twelve individuals, including nine Bangladeshi nationals and three Indian citizens. The Bangladeshi nationals were identified as Md Mostafa (39), Manir Hussain (38), Md Manik Mia (32), Nasir Ahmed (49), Md Shah Alom (28), Motaleb Sk (39), Sofiqul Islam Badshah (29), Bilal Hussain (36), and Joel Miah (42). The Indian nationals were identified as Sengbat R Marak (29), Prebiush M Sangma (18), and Samarendro Koch (42). Items seized from their possession included twelve mobile phones, Rs. 29,500/- in cash, Aadhaar cards, and other incriminating documents. Enquiry revealed that the Bangladeshi nationals had illegally crossed the border into India via Sylhet/Silchar, Assam, and were being facilitated by Sengbat R Marak and others for their return to Bangladesh for a fee of Rs. 7,000/- per person. All twelve individuals have been arrested. Investigations are ongoing.
East Khasi Hills:
- Mobile Tower Theft: Shamborlang Thabah reported the theft of a mobile tower and its equipment. The stolen property, belonging to GTL Infrastructure Ltd., was taken from Weiloi village in East Khasi Hills.
- Cattle Smuggling: Acting on intelligence inputs, Border Security Force (BSF) personnel from E-Coy, 110th Bn., BOP Ryngku (EKH) thwarted a cattle smuggling attempt near the Chillai River under Delsora village (EKH) on February 4th. While the suspected smugglers fled upon encountering the BSF patrol, they left behind eight head of cattle, which were recovered by the BSF.
- Construction Materials Theft: Sbunbha Shylla reported the theft of construction materials, including wires, valued at approximately Rs. 1,52,400/-. The materials were stolen from an under-construction building at Lumkhyriem, Umpling, Rynjah, Shillong on February 5th.
- Burglary at BRO Headquarters: Another theft incident was reported by Dharnesh Kemprai. Unknown individuals broke into the premises of HQ R&DE (BRO) at Umpling, Shillong, on January 31st and stole a water geyser from the JCO Mess Hall.
