Historic Moment for Meghalaya: State to Host National Games in 2027

Shillong, February 11 : In a historic announcement, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has confirmed that Meghalaya will host the 39th National Games in early 2027.

The decision was conveyed in a letter from IOA President P.T. Usha to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, acknowledging Meghalaya’s “commitment to promoting sports and its capability to host a prestigious multi-sport event of this scale.”

A delegation from Meghalaya, including the Chief Minister, Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri, representatives from the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, and athletes and coaches from across the state, will travel to Uttarakhand to receive the National Games flag at the closing ceremony of the ongoing 38th National Games on February 14th.

“The National Games are a symbol of the Nation’s drive to pursue excellence in sports. It creates role models and stories of perseverance that inspire. It is an honor for Meghalaya to host the event and have our youth take in the excitement of the Games!” said Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.

Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Meghalaya has seen significant developments in its sports ecosystem in recent times, and we are ready to be considered amongst the sporting powerhouses of the nation. We look forward to welcoming athletes and fans alike to Meghalaya to experience all the State has to offer!”

The 39th National Games, originally scheduled for 2022, was delayed due to the pandemic and scheduling conflicts with other host states. Meghalaya has utilized this time to strengthen its sports infrastructure, investing in facilities across the state and supporting the growth of sporting talent. This announcement comes on the heels of Meghalaya’s successful performance at the current National Games, where they have already secured five medals.

Meghalaya has already begun preparations for the 2027 Games, collaborating with the Meghalaya State Olympic Association to identify suitable venues for nearly 40 sports. The Games will be hosted across the state, with major events taking place in Shillong, Tura, and Jowai. Key venues include the J.N. Sports Complex, the P.A. Sangma Sports Complex, the Wahiajer Stadium, and the upcoming Mawdiangdiang Sports Complex and Integrated Hospitality and Sports Complex.

The hosting of the National Games marks a significant milestone for Meghalaya and will provide a platform to showcase the state’s sporting prowess and infrastructure to the nation.
