Sohra, June 5 : Mawmluh, Sohra, today marked World Environment Day 2025 with a comprehensive program focused on this year’s crucial theme: “Ending Global Plastic Pollution.” The event, a collaborative effort between the Mawmluh Tourism & Allied Activities Co-operative Society (MTAACS) and the Department of Environment and Traditional Ecosystems, along with the Rangers and Rovers of Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU), Shillong, saw enthusiastic participation from local communities and schools.
The day’s proceedings commenced with an opening address by Bansan Kupar Lyngdoh, Secretary of MTAACS. The program was graced by the presence of A. Kynta, BDO, Shella Bholaganj C&RD, and members of Women SHGs.
A significant highlight was the involvement of three local schools: Rama Krishna Mission Secondary School, Nabon Sawian Memorial Secondary School, and Rabon Sing Memorial Lower Primary School. Students from these schools actively participated in drawing and poetry competitions centered around the theme of plastic pollution, showcasing their creativity and understanding of the environmental challenge. Prizes were distributed to recognize their efforts.
Further bolstering the awareness campaign, students from MLCU’s Department of Environment and Traditional Ecosystems conducted an insightful session on plastic pollution, educating attendees on its impacts and mitigation strategies.
The event also featured the release of a pamphlet titled “Butterflies of Cherapunji” by Sanjay Sondi of Titli Trust, adding a touch of local biodiversity conservation to the day’s agenda.
Following the formal program, a significant tree plantation drive was undertaken. A total of 80 saplings were planted, with a unique commitment from participants: each individual who planted a sapling also pledged to take care of it throughout its growing phase, ensuring the long-term success of the initiative.
