Shillong, July 18 : The District Level Stop Diarrhoea Campaign 2025 was officially launched today at Laitlyngkot PHC by the District Medical & Health Officer’s office, East Khasi Hills. The campaign aims to reduce child mortality among children under five years old and promote child health and safety.
Gavin M Mylliem, MLA of Sohra Constituency, graced the event as Chief Guest. In his address, Mylliem highlighted that 8% of Meghalaya’s total budget has been allocated to the Health Sector, underscoring the government’s prioritization of health. He also mentioned the Health Department’s consistent efforts in conducting various health awareness programs.
The MLA urged attendees to disseminate the information received to their families, friends, and communities to ensure the program’s success and improve the overall health of the local populace. He further appealed to community leaders to encourage everyone to link their Aadhaar cards with MHIS to access healthcare benefits in hospitals. Gavin also announced that Laitlyngkot PHC would be receiving an ambulance to enhance access to emergency medical care. He expressed his gratitude to all doctors, nurses, Anganwadi workers, ANMs, and health workers for their tireless efforts despite numerous challenges.
Dr. J. Nongrum, Pediatrician at Sohra CHC, spoke about the causes, symptoms, and treatment of diarrhoea. She emphasized the importance of preventive measures, including proper handwashing, personal hygiene, and the use of ORS and Zinc in combating diarrhoea. Dr. Nongrum also stressed the significance of proper breastfeeding and healthy eating habits in protecting children from diarrhoea and other illnesses.
Dr. A Kharduit, the District Medical & Health Officer, highlighted the crucial role of routine immunization and vaccination in preventing diseases, disabilities, and deaths among children. She also emphasized the importance of routine health screenings for early disease detection, which can identify potential health issues like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and certain cancers before they become serious.
The program concluded with the MLA handing over the ambulance to Laitlyngkot PHC, followed by a Blood Donation Camp.
