Total Lunar Eclipse to Grace Skies on September 7–8, Visible Across India

Shillong, September 5 : Skywatchers are in for a celestial treat as a total lunar eclipse will occur on the night of September 7–8, 2025, visible across India in its entirety.

The umbral phase will begin at 9:57 PM IST on September 7 and end at 1:27 AM IST on September 8. The period of totality—when the Moon will be fully engulfed in Earth’s shadow—will last from 11:00 PM IST on September 7 to 12:23 AM IST on September 8, a span of 1 hour 23 minutes.

The overall eclipse will last 3 hours and 30 minutes, with a magnitude of 1.368, making it a significant astronomical event.

Apart from India, the eclipse will also be visible across regions of Antarctica, Australasia, Asia, the Indian Ocean, Europe, and the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

The last lunar eclipse visible in India was a partial eclipse on October 28, 2023. The next lunar eclipse, also a total eclipse, is expected on March 3, 2026.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon during a full moon, causing Earth’s shadow to fall on the Moon. The total eclipse happens when the Moon is completely covered by Earth’s umbral shadow.
