Governor C.H. Vijayashankar Presents State Awards to Outstanding Teachers

Shillong, September 5: The 64th State Level Teachers’ Day celebration, organised by the Directorate of School Education and Literacy, was held on Friday at the U Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong. Teachers from across Meghalaya gathered to mark the occasion.

Governor C.H. Vijayashankar graced the event as chief guest and presented the prestigious State Awards to outstanding teachers from all districts.

The awardees included: East Khasi Hills: Raynold Basaiawmoit (Gorkha Secondary School, 3rd Mile), Dafrit Nongkynrih (Tynring Government L.P. School), West Khasi Hills: Firemoris Marngar (Pungphreit Government L.P. School), Eastern West Khasi Hills: Sr. Cicilia Kujur (St. Thomas Higher Secondary School, Mairang), South West Khasi Hills: Sengman Sangma (Lower Umsih Government L.P. School), West Jaintia Hills: Diamond Paswet (Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Jowai), East Jaintia Hills: Tasiana Kymphat (Tluh Secondary School), Ri Bhoi District: Sukanta Bhattacharjee (St. Michael’s Higher Secondary School, Umsning), East Garo Hills: Aswini Kumar Sarma (Rongrenggiri Model Deficit Secondary School, Williamnagar), North Garo Hills: Maximus M. Kujur (Bajengdoba Government U.P. School, Resubelpara), West Garo Hills, Tura: Alithson G. Momin (Ampanggre Government L.P. School), Purida I. Sangma (Chitoktak U.P. School).

In his address, Governor Vijayashankar lauded the teaching community as the backbone of nation-building. Recalling that his own father was a school headmaster, he spoke of his deep appreciation for the dedication and responsibility carried by teachers.

He emphasised that teachers not only impart knowledge but also instil values, guiding students to distinguish right from wrong and to become responsible citizens. Acknowledging that a mother is often the first teacher in a child’s life, he expressed equal respect for mothers and educators as key influences.

The Governor called for teachers to be celebrated beyond a single day each year and urged officials to ensure that educational policies are implemented effectively for the benefit of students across Meghalaya.

Quoting former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, he said: “True education is about building life, character, and values—not just acquiring information.”

As part of the celebrations, the Governor launched a video awareness campaign on IFC tablets under the PM POSHAN scheme. The launch was attended by Additional Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed, Director of School Education and Literacy B.J. Kharshandi, and other senior officials.

The event concluded with a cultural programme, paying tribute to the dedication and spirit of teachers who continue to shape Meghalaya’s future generations.
