CM Inaugurates Nongkharai Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, Emphasizes Education and Youth Development

Shillong, October 15 : Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the newly constructed Nongkharai Presbyterian Higher Secondary School at Umsohpieng, marking a significant milestone for the local community’s educational development. The inauguration ceremony was attended by government officials, community leaders, educators, and residents.

In his address, the Chief Minister reflected on Meghalaya’s seven-and-a-half-year journey of progress, underscoring the government’s emphasis on welfare, infrastructure, and human resource development.

He shared that Meghalaya is currently the second fastest-growing economy in India after Tamil Nadu, achieving a consistent 10% annual growth rate over the past three years. He further highlighted that the state government has invested ₹3,654 crores in the education sector, alongside grants-in-aid and other developmental support.

Speaking about educational reforms, the Chief Minister announced the introduction of a structured salary system for adhoc and SSA teachers, designed to bring long-term stability and efficiency to the education system over the next 10–20 years.

Encouraging parents and teachers to guide the younger generation toward positive pursuits, he said, “Our youth must be encouraged to explore their potential through sports, music, entrepreneurship, and community work. These are the foundations of a strong and progressive society.”

He also announced that the Chief Minister’s Special Grant Fund would provide musical instruments to students of Sijun Memorial School and Nongkharai Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, emphasizing that music enhances creativity and cognitive growth among students.

Methodius Dkhar, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, who attended as the Guest of Honour, thanked the Chief Minister for gracing the occasion and acknowledged the event as a major milestone for the constituency and community.

He lauded the collective efforts of leaders past and present, recalling the contributions of (L) D.D. Lapang and (L) P.A. Sangma, whose vision, he said, “laid the foundation for the school’s growth and the region’s educational advancement.”

Rev. A. Nongbri, President of the School Managing Committee, welcomed all dignitaries and outlined the school’s vision to provide quality education fostering academic excellence, creativity, and character development.

Rev. S.B. Lyngdoh, Secretary of the School Managing Committee, presented a detailed overview of the school’s journey—from its humble beginnings to the construction of the new secondary school building, supported by both the government and community. He also proposed future plans for the school, including RCC fencing for the campus, Recruitment of additional teaching staff, Construction of hostels, especially for female students.

The event featured cultural performances by students, adding a festive touch to the ceremony. The inauguration drew participation from local residents, parents, and students, who expressed optimism about the school’s role in shaping a brighter educational future for the area.

Among the dignitaries present were Remington Gabil Momin, MLA of Rambrai–Jyrngam Constituency, Lurshai Kharbani, local MDC, and several government officials and community representatives.
