MLCU PRESS LAUNCHES FIRST KHASI-LANGUAGE POETRY BOOK, UMPOHLIEW: KA JINGSHEMPHANG

Shillong, November 13: The Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) Press launched Umpohliew: Ka Jingshemphang, a Khasi poetry collection by Kong Sbunbha Kharumnuid.

Dr Larilin Kharpuri, Pro Vice Chancellor and Head of MLCU Press, opened the programme with a warm welcome to the Chief Guest Bah Kitborlang Syiem, Guest of Honour Fr Suresh Kagoo, the author Kong Sbunbha Kharumnuid, Kong Patricia Mukhim, and the Vice Chancellor Dr A.A. Mao, along with MLCU officers, faculty, staff, and students. She highlighted that Umpohliew: Ka Jingshemphang is the first Khasi-language book published by MLCU Press, marking a proud milestone for the University.

Fr Suresh Kagoo, Parish Priest of Jongksha, shared heartfelt memories of knowing the author and her family since 1984. He described Kong Sbunbha’s journey, from a hardworking street vendor to a published poet, as a touching story of perseverance, faith, and blessing. Reflecting on academic life, he remarked that for PhD scholars, publishing a book or paper is a compulsory requirement, yet Kong Sbunbha, despite her limited formal education, has accomplished what many pursue through years of study. He praised this achievement as a true testament to her natural talent and determination.

Kong Patricia Mukhim, Board Member of MLCU and Editor of The Shillong Times, recalled meeting Kong Sbunbha in the market and being deeply inspired by her humility and perceptive nature. She praised the author for her ability to see beauty in ordinary moments and to write profound poetry that speaks from the heart.

In her speech, Kong Sbunbha Kharumnuid thanked God, MLCU Press, and everyone involved in bringing the book to life. She shared that her poetry is written to inspire others and reflect the resilience and emotions of everyday life.

The book was officially released by Bah Kitborlang Syiem, MDC of Nongkrem Constituency and an alumnus of MLCU’s Tourism Department (Class of 2012). In his remarks, he lauded MLCU Press for their dedication and expressed admiration for the author’s generosity, sincerity, and hard work.

The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Bah Baphrangdor Thangkhiew of MLCU Press and was hosted by Dr Badalamshisha Dkhar, Director of the Centre for Tribal Knowledge and Practices, MLCU. Umpohliew : Ka Jingshemphang stands as a milestone in MLCU Press’s journey to celebrate indigenous voices and promote the richness of Khasi literature.
