Cricket: MCA to support Maitshaphrang Khasi League; seeks partners for Garo Hills tourney

Shillong, November 14: In a major boost to the development of cricket among Meghalaya’s tribal population, the Apex Council of the Meghalaya Cricket Association has agreed to extend support to the Khasi Students’ Union for its annual cricket tournament, MCA Honorary Secretary Rayonald Kharkamni informed today.

The Maitshaphrang Khasi League is a T20 cricket tournament meant to promote the development of the sport among Khasi youth and the MCA’s role will be to provide technical and other support as required.

In a similar vein, the MCA is seeking avenues for such a tournament in the Garo Hills, with MCA Vice-President Sengnab Momin leading the process, Kharkamni added.

The state association has been actively pursuing ways to encourage the local indigenous youth into taking up cricket, from the school level upwards and through special camps and academies in towns and rural areas alike, while always keeping cricket open to all communities. The support to the KSU is in line with the MCA’s general cricket development activities that have seen the state become a major regional player in the sport.
