Tura, November 18 : The national tricolour soared high over the skies of Tura today as Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma led the official flag hoisting ceremony at the P.A. Sangma Sports Complex, Dakopgre. The event marked the inauguration of the newly installed high mast national flag, symbolizing unity and pride.
The ceremony was attended by Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal, IAS, Superintendent of Police Abraham T. Sangma, IPS, along with senior government officials and community members. The Chief Minister hoisted the flag to the accompaniment of the National Anthem, followed by an address that evoked a deep sense of patriotism.
Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said, “The national flag is a symbol of our identity. It represents our unity, sovereignty, freedom, and values. Hoisting this high mast flag at the P.A. Sangma Sports Complex is a tribute to our great nation, India.”
He announced that Tura is now the second location in Meghalaya to host a high mast flag and informed that similar installations will soon be set up in Jowai and other district headquarters across the state.
Highlighting ongoing development initiatives, the Chief Minister said that the second phase of the Tura Beautification Project will soon commence with an allocation of ₹16 crore. “The project will focus on the beautification of the Tura Bazar area — including new streetlights, pavement renovation, and an upgraded façade for the Tura Super Market,” he said.
He also shared plans for the third phase, which will cover Araimile Junction to the end of P.A. Sangma Road, and announced the continuation of the ‘Paint My City’ campaign to enhance the town’s visual appeal. He urged residents to cooperate, adding, “The success of these projects depends on everyone’s participation. Keeping our town clean is our shared responsibility.”
The Chief Minister detailed several key infrastructure developments in the Dakopgre area, calling it a hub of progressfor Tura. He highlighted the construction of the additional Secretariat building, Ongoing work on a Convention Centre beside the recently inaugurated MPSC Office, Plans for Tura’s first five-star hotel, to be developed by the Hilton Group on the site of the former Orchid Hotel, expected to be completed within 24 months.
Turning to sports development, the Chief Minister said Tura is being prepared for the National Games 2027. He informed that expansion works at Pa Togan Nengminja Stadium, including the construction of additional galleries and facilities, are underway. He added that construction has also started for the Multi-Disciplinary Indoor Stadium adjacent to the P.A. Sangma Sports Complex and the Sunny Hill Indoor Stadium.
Concluding his address, the Chief Minister called upon citizens to uphold civic pride and maintain cleanliness. “It is the duty of every citizen to keep Tura clean. Without collective effort, even the best infrastructure will lose its meaning,” he said.
The event began with a welcome address by J.D. Sangma, Chairman of the Tura Municipal Board, followed by performances by local artists.
To mark the occasion, the Chief Minister also flagged off a road-sweeping machine, reinforcing his government’s commitment to cleanliness and urban management in Tura.
