Shillong, January 30: Meghalaya on Friday joined the rest of the nation in observing the 78th Martyrs’ Day, paying homage to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India’s independence and commemorating the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
In the state capital, senior government officials led by Principal Secretary F.R. Kharkongor offered floral tributes at Mahatma Gandhi’s statue at the Main Secretariat. A siren was sounded at 10:59 am, following which all activities, including work, traffic and public movement, came to a brief halt as people observed a two-minute silence at 11 AM.
As part of the observance, All India Radio suspended its broadcasts during the tribute. A second siren at 11:02 AM marked the end of the two-minute silence.
