Shillong, February 3: The Governor of Meghalaya, C.H. Vijayashankar, on Monday interacted with a visiting media delegation from Karnataka during a courtesy meeting at Lok Bhavan here. The delegation is in the State as part of a press tour organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Government of India, to provide journalists firsthand exposure to Meghalaya’s culture, heritage and development initiatives.
The engagement assumed special significance as the Governor hails from Mysuru, Karnataka. Addressing the delegation in Kannada, Vijayashankar created a warm and familiar atmosphere that encouraged an open and meaningful exchange with the visiting journalists.
Briefing the delegation on the State’s socio-cultural fabric, the Governor spoke about Meghalaya’s distinctive matrilineal system, rich tribal traditions and the peaceful coexistence of diverse communities. He noted that these age-old values continue to shape the identity and social harmony of the region.
He also outlined Meghalaya’s potential in agriculture, tourism and allied sectors, stressing the need for sustainable and eco-friendly development. Promotion of indigenous products alongside environmental conservation and inclusive growth, he said, remains a key priority.
As a gesture of goodwill, the Governor felicitated the delegation with Ryndia, Meghalaya’s traditional handwoven fabric. Explaining its significance, he said the cloth is made from Ahimsa silk produced without harming silkworms, reflecting the State’s deep-rooted ethical and environmental consciousness.
Vijayashankar also highlighted Lakadong turmeric, renowned globally for its high curcumin content. He spoke about ongoing efforts to brand it as a premium organic product to boost farmers’ incomes and strengthen the rural economy.
Members of the delegation expressed gratitude for the hospitality and the informative interaction, saying the tour had given them a deeper understanding of Meghalaya’s traditions and development journey. They observed that such engagements would help in presenting well-informed perspectives on the State to a national audience.
