Shillong, March 13: The Department of Commerce & Industries, Government of Meghalaya, on Friday felicitated the State Handicraft Artisans of the Year 2024–25 during a function held at the Conference Hall of the Directorate of Commerce & Industries in Shillong.
A total of five artisans from different districts of the state were selected for the prestigious award in recognition of their contribution to preserving and promoting traditional handicrafts.
The awardees are Phras Syngkli of Umkaduh, Ri-Bhoi District, Gilford Pde of Chilliang Raij, West Jaintia Hills District, Mamsikha N Sangma of Balsri A’ding Chitoktak, West Garo Hills District, Ensila D Shira of Rongreng Chidekgre, Williamnagar, East Garo Hills District and Wanstep Thangkhiew of Umsong, Ri-Bhoi District
Each awardee received a cash prize of ₹50,000, a trophy, and a certificate. The awards were presented by Director of Commerce & Industries F. Sutnga in the presence of Joint Director M. L. Wanshnong and other senior officials of the department.
The programme was also attended by representatives from the Meghalaya Handloom & Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd (MHHDC), Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (MIDC), Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Government of India, National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), and National Awardee Asuk Suting.
Speaking at the event, Director F. Sutnga said the awards recognise the dedication and hard work of artisans who continue to preserve indigenous crafts of the state. He noted that such recognition helps safeguard traditional skills and cultural heritage passed down through generations.
He further announced that the department will extend additional support to the awardees, including financial assistance such as seed money for construction of working sheds, tools and equipment, and working capital, as well as support for training and mentoring new artisans.
The Director also highlighted that the upcoming Innovation & Research Centre (I&RC) will assist artisans in developing new craft designs with improved functionality while maintaining traditional aesthetics. The centre will be equipped with 3D printers and software for prototyping, enabling the development and standardisation of innovative craft products.
Officials said both current and past state awardees will play a key role in contributing their knowledge and experience to the centre, helping strengthen and promote indigenous handicrafts from different regions of Meghalaya.
