NLU Meghalaya Observes International Women’s Day with Panel Discussion

Shillong, March 12 : The National Law University (NLU) Meghalaya observed International Women’s Day 2026 with a panel discussion on the theme “Give to Gain – Her Story: Women Leading Through Service and Storytelling” at the APJ Abdul Kalam Hall, Mayurbhanj Complex, Nongthymmai, Shillong on Thursday.

The programme brought together academics, social leaders, and students to discuss the role of storytelling, service, and leadership in shaping women’s empowerment and social change.

The panel featured Prof. Esther Syiem, bilingual writer and retired Professor of English at North-Eastern Hill University; Jemimah Marak, founder of 100 Story House and member of the State Women’s Commission; and Shannon Dona Massar, co-founder and director of Faith Foundation, Shillong.

The event was attended by Vice Chancellor (in-charge) K.M. Lyngdoh Nongbri, Registrar Prof. (Dr.) Baharul Islam, along with faculty members, staff and students of NLU Meghalaya.

During the discussion, Prof. Esther Syiem and Shannon Massar highlighted the importance of reconnecting with cultural roots and examining gender in the broader context of development. They noted that issues affecting women have wider implications for communities and economies.

Jemimah Marak emphasised the role of storytelling as a powerful tool for empowerment. She explained that narrative therapy can help trauma survivors reframe their experiences, move beyond victimhood, and reclaim their strength.

Concluding the session, Vice Chancellor (in-charge) K.M. Lyngdoh Nongbri observed that when survivors share their experiences, they not only revisit trauma but transform it into meaningful learning that encourages empathy and ethical storytelling in academic and social spaces.

The panel discussion highlighted how women across India continue to lead through service, resilience, and storytelling, shaping families, communities and institutions across generations.
