STARLINK INDIA TO EXPLORE ROLLOUT OF SATELLITE-BASED HIGH-SPEED INTERNET ACROSS MEGHALAYA

Shillong, April 01: In a major step towards improving digital infrastructure, the Government of Meghalaya has entered into a collaboration with Starlink India to explore the rollout of satellite-based high-speed internet services across the state. A Letter of Intent (LoI) was signed between the Government of Meghalaya and Starlink India, marking the beginning of efforts to expand connectivity to remote and underserved regions.

The initiative aims to leverage advanced satellite technology to Provide reliable high-speed internet, Improve access in difficult terrains and Bridge the digital divide across rural and remote areas. Officials stated that the project will support key sectors such as education, healthcare, governance, and disaster management.

The event was attended by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, along with senior government officials and representatives from Starlink, including senior executives from SpaceX. Dr. Sampath Kumar, IAS, highlighted the government’s vision of using technology to enhance public service delivery and community development.

Starlink representatives appreciated the state government’s proactive approach in adopting new technologies and expressed commitment to supporting Meghalaya’s digital growth. They noted that the collaboration could play a key role in accelerating development and improving connectivity in challenging terrains.

The Chief Minister emphasized the challenges posed by Meghalaya’s unique geography, which has historically affected internet connectivity. He expressed optimism that the partnership with Starlink will Enhance digital access across sectors, Promote inclusive growth and Unlock new economic opportunities.

As part of the collaboration, the government will initiate a pilot project using Starlink’s satellite internet services in selected areas. The move is expected to ensure that digital services reach every corner of the state, paving the way for a more connected and future-ready Meghalaya.
