Shillong, August 7: Three alleged motorcycle lifters were remanded to three days’ police custody after being produced before a court on Friday in connection with the theft of a motorcycle intercepted during a late-night police operation in East Khasi Hills district.
The arrested persons have been identified as Johnson Mawiong (18) of Kongwang village, East Khasi Hills, who was allegedly driving the vehicle; Kyrmenlang Mawiong (18) of Sohlong village, East Khasi Hills; and Nironton Tangsong (24) of Mawryngkang village, East Khasi Hills.
According to police, the incident took place on Thursday night when a motorcycle without a registration number was spotted travelling from Laitlyngkot towards Pynursla. The rider allegedly violated traffic restrictions by entering through the No Entry point at Laitkynsew, prompting traffic personnel to pursue the vehicle and alert police personnel stationed at a nearby naka.
The motorcycle was tracked to Mawlieh, Lyngkyrdem, where the suspects allegedly attempted to load it into an Alto car (registration number DL 3CBC 1793) that was waiting at the location.
When the police team attempted to apprehend the suspects, one of them managed to escape, while two others were detained at the scene along with the motorcycle and the Alto car. Police later used the mobile phone of one of the detained suspects to trace and apprehend the third accused, who was also brought to the police station.
The recovered motorcycle did not bear a registration number plate. Police identified the vehicle through its chassis number ME1RG67H9P0008597 and engine number G3N4E0567929.
Police have seized both the motorcycle and the Alto car in connection with the case. Investigators are working to establish the ownership of the recovered motorcycle and determine whether the accused are linked to other motorcycle theft cases in the district.
The three accused were produced before the court on Friday, which remanded them to three days’ police custody for further investigation.
