Shillong, April 1: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday announced that the long-pending LPG bottling plant in Meghalaya is expected to be completed soon, with construction now progressing at a fast pace.
Speaking to the media, Sangma said the project had been delayed for years but gained momentum after the present government took key decisions, including land allocation and initiating construction. “It was pending for a long time, but now construction has started and is progressing quickly. We expect it to be completed very soon,” the Chief Minister said.
The Chief Minister acknowledged that the project should have been completed earlier but emphasized that the government has now brought it to an advanced stage. He noted that while construction takes time, the current pace indicates that completion is within reach in the near future.
Sangma highlighted that commercial LPG supply remains under pressure across the country, affecting availability in Meghalaya as well. However, he assured that domestic LPG supply in the state is largely stable, with only minor shortages reported. “For domestic use, we are managing. There are some shortages, but not significant,” he stated.
The Chief Minister informed that the government has increased commercial LPG allocation from 20% to 70%, although the full impact is yet to be felt. He expressed optimism that supply will improve in the coming days and businesses will gradually get relief.
Sangma pointed out that nearly 90% of LPG supplies pass through sensitive international routes, which has contributed to ongoing challenges. Despite this, he said the Government of India is taking steps to stabilise supply chains and minimise inconvenience to consumers.
The upcoming LPG bottling plant is expected to play a crucial role in Improving local storage and distribution, reducing dependency on external supply chains, enhancing overall energy security in Meghalaya.
The development is seen as a significant step toward ensuring more reliable LPG availability in the state.
