Shillong, April 10: Police of East Khasi Hills district have sought custody from the court to further interrogate Kennedy Khongsit in order to ascertain his connection with Eilang Phawa.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Vivek Syiem said, “In connection with this case, we have gathered evidence and have taken custody of Kennedy Khongsit from the court. Today, he has been remanded to jail again in connection with an earlier case involving the murder of a 7-year-old boy, and we will now seek custody in relation to the death of Eilang Phawa.”
He added that the investigation is progressing and expressed hope that it would be completed within 90 days. “We are hopeful of filing charges at the earliest in this case,” the SP said.
When asked about the relationship between the accused and the deceased, he stated, “As per his (Kennedy Khongsit’s) statement, he claimed that they knew each other and were friends. However, once we obtain custody and conduct further interrogation, we will be able to determine whether their relationship was only friendship or something more.”
The SP further informed that the police have not yet received the post-mortem report but expect it soon, which will help ascertain the exact cause of death of Eilang Phawa (39). Her body, wrapped in a plastic sack, was recovered from a stream at Lapalang, near the boundary between Nongrah and Lapalang.
He also revealed that police have found multiple pieces of evidence indicating that the victim was last seen with Kennedy Khongsit on the 21st March, 2026. The accused has reportedly admitted to taking her to an abandoned house near the location, where the incident is suspected to have occurred. A forensic team has already visited the site to collect evidence, and further examination is underway.
According to the SP, preliminary findings suggest that Kennedy Khongsit is the sole person involved in the death of Eilang Phawa.
