Shillong, April 14: A non-local man has been detained and handed over to police by the Khasi Students Union (KSU) Laitumkhrah Unit following allegations of molestation of a Khasi girl at a clinic in Laitumkhrah.
The accused, identified as Bulu Malakar from Karimganj district of Assam, was reportedly residing at Laitumkhrah New Colony. Though employed as a sales person, he allegedly posed as a pharmacist at a pharmacy named Meghalaya Pharmacy in the area.
According to the KSU, the incident came to light after a young woman visited the pharmacy to purchase medicine for a mouth-related ailment. The accused allegedly lured her into a doctor’s chamber on the pretext of checking her blood pressure. Once inside, he reportedly asked her to lie down and pretended to examine her before allegedly touching her inappropriately.
It was further alleged that he attempted to assault her by lowering his trousers, but the victim managed to resist, raise an alarm, and flee from the premises.
The victim immediately informed members of the KSU, who, along with Dorbar shnong representatives and members of the Seng Samla Shnong Laitumkhrah Pyllun, located the accused and took him to Laitumkhrah Police Station.
A formal complaint has been lodged by the victim’s family, along with the Dorbar Shnong and the KSU, with both the police and the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW). The matter has been handed over to the police for further investigation.
Meanwhile, the KSU and Dorbar shnong authorities have shut down the pharmacy and warned of strict action against individuals involved in such incidents.
