IMD Issues Multi-Day Weather Warning for Meghalaya; Heavy Rain Likely in Several Districts

Shillong, April 26: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Meteorological Centre Shillong, has issued a five-day weather warning for Meghalaya, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of the state.

According to the weather warning map released on April 26, the state will largely remain under a “watch” (yellow alert)category on Day 1 (April 26), with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds ranging between 30–40 kmph expected across districts.

From Day 2 (April 27) onwards, the situation is likely to intensify, particularly in eastern parts of the state, where “alert” (orange warning) has been issued for districts including East Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills, and West Jaintia Hills. These areas may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds of up to 50 kmph.

The warning continues through Day 3 (April 28), Day 4 (April 29), and Day 5 (April 30), with eastern districts consistently under higher alert levels, indicating a greater risk of intense rainfall and thunderstorms.

The IMD has highlighted the possibility of:

  • Thunderstorms with lightning
  • Gusty winds ranging from 30–50 kmph
  • Heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 115.5 mm)
  • Very heavy rainfall (115.6 mm to 204.4 mm)

Authorities have advised residents, especially in vulnerable and low-lying areas, to remain cautious and take necessary precautions during this period.

The department has also urged the public to stay updated with official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions.
