Shillong, May 2 : Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday inaugurated the newly constructed Umlyngka Indoor Stadium and Football Ground, marking a significant step towards strengthening sports infrastructure and youth development in Meghalaya.
Built at a cost of ₹3.57 crore, the facility aims to provide modern training and recreational opportunities for athletes and youth in the region.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the government has been consistently working to promote holistic development across the state. He emphasised that investments in sports infrastructure are investments in the future of young people.
“Spending over ₹3.5 crore on this stadium is not an expense but an investment in our youth and the future of the state,” he said.
Sangma also highlighted that nearly ₹25 crore has been invested in sports infrastructure within the Mylliem constituency, reflecting the government’s commitment to developing sports at the grassroots level.
MLA Ronnie V. Lyngdoh thanked the government for the initiative, stating that the stadium and upgraded football ground will provide quality facilities for youth and help nurture talent. He also acknowledged the contribution of the Sports Department and former Sports Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh in sanctioning the project.
Adviser to the Chief Minister, Hamletson Dohling, termed the inauguration a historic moment for the people of Umlyngka and urged youth to utilise the facility responsibly to enhance their skills and prepare for future opportunities, including the National Games 2027.
The stadium is designed to support training, competitions, and community engagement, promoting physical activity and overall well-being.
The event also saw the Chief Minister announce financial assistance to local performing groups through the Chief Minister’s Special Grant.
